Maja Gray: Born Adventurer!

Adventure

“Growing up I always had a sense of adventure”, Maja Gray recalled of her first love. She thinks it might have something to do with her parents taking her on a trip at 5 months to Europe on the RMS Queen Elizabeth. But it’s more likely crossing the Atlantic six times by the age of 7 that set her course as a Born Adventurer.

biggest adventure in the world

Maja has had many adventures. But she is about to embark on the biggest one of her life setting sail in mid August 2019-2020. The Clipper Round the World Race is “one of the biggest adventures in the world”, Maja boasts. She’ll be part of a 20 person crew racing a 70 foot sailboat covering 40,000 miles in 11 months, in 8 race legs and making 12 port calls.

Clipper Round the World Race

Maja first heard of Clipper Round the World Race in 2013 in Sydney when she crossed paths with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. Her hero had inspired her to follow in his wake after he circumnavigated the world in 1969. Knox-Johnston conceived the Clipper Round the World Race in 1996 giving people an opportunity to learn offshore sailing.”I love the idea of taking a group of individuals, and teaching them the skills and teamwork needed to sail”, Maja added.

Plastic

Five years later, Maja is committed to realizing her dream of sailing round the world. She incorporates an enormous amount of physical training into her daily routine for the Clipper Round the World Race. From improving her sailing skills to raising the necessary funds to take part. Maja has partnered with a non-profit to help bring awareness to the problem of plastic in our oceans. “I have always loved the ocean and all things water.”

My greatest challenge

Maja is confident she will complete the entire circumnavigation. Empower 1 million people to start living their best life. And, bring awareness to the importance of taking care of our oceans. “This will be my greatest challenge”, Maja confided. “More people have climbed Mt. Everest than they have sailed around the world.” #Maja’sClipperJourney

MPM “What did you want to be when you grew up?”

“I originally wanted to be both the first woman crew member on Jacques Cousteau’s boat the Calypso and sail around the world.” Maja said she has never had any fear of learning to swim. At five, she jumped into the deep end of a swimming pool in France while her Dad was blowing up her water wings. “He of course jumped in after me and got me off the bottom of the pool.”Maja giggled. But as soon as her Dad put her back on deck she was in the pool sans water wings. “So no fear and just always felt like a fish in the water”, Maja smiled.

Love for the Ocean

I “had already developed a love for the ocean. I was lucky enough to have a Father that loved boats”, Maja recalled fondly. Her Father wasn’t a sailor but he passed on his love of the ocean. “As a kid I’d …go out on deck during the storms, taking in the waves and breathing in the salt air, while all the other kids stayed inside playing games. I was drawn to the ocean. And have been all my life.”

MPM “What jobs did you do in the past?”

“What haven’t I done! I’ve worked in print shops, been a volunteer fire fighter, a speaker, writer, event coordinator, training coordinator, logistics, ran a colonics facility for Tony Robbins, a photographer, worked on computers, managed a training budget for the California Coast Guard and an America’s Cup training facility. 18 years in the Coast Guard jumping out of planes to working on and driving small rescue boats to doing law enforcement on the water to counting icebergs up off Newfoundland and that was just in the Coast Guard.”

MPM “Newfoundland is one of my favourite places. Counting icebergs?”

“The US Coast Guard is tasked to run the International Ice Patrol to keep the waterways safe by spotting any hazards. I spent 4 winters flying up there and spending several days staying both in St. John’s and Gander. It was soooooo cold but such an amazing experience!”

MPM “Can you share a harrowing tale of being at sea?”

“I have had several. Most of which I cannot talk about. But the one I can talk about, even though it isn’t really a rescue, was the day the Challenger Space Shuttle blew up. Maja remembers January 28, 1986 very well. “It was my very first day of standing Search & Rescue Duty. I remember watching it on TV and seeing the explosion live.” Ten minutes later the alarm was sounded signalling Maja’s team to look for debris.

MPM “How do you define success?”

“I truly believe…each and everyone of us has greatnesses inside. No one wakes up in the morning and wants to fail! I think success is a matter of finding a way to combine what you are passionate about with your purpose.” Maja believes passion is something that makes your heart soar. “For me it’s the oceans and sailing. And my purpose is how I add value to the world which is to empower 1 million people to live their best life!”

The Thread

The ocean and boats have been the thread that connects every event in Maja’s life. But it’s the conversations she’s had with people around the world that led her to her third love. Maja’s keen interest in personal development started with her fascination with what makes people tick? Why do some people thrive, while others struggle? What are they passionate about?

passion and purpose

At majagray.com , Maja combines her passion for the ocean and boats with her purpose of empowering people to realize their dreams. “I wanted a place to both share my observations and lessons learned, while helping each other shine in the world.” Maja is dedicated to building a tribe of like minded individuals and helping them achieve their goals.
